Incremental Shift

I’ve been looking at the work of John Whitney Sr and creating ‘intangible’ artworks, and thought I’d get back into some computer programming, somthing I’ve not done for quite a few years now. The intangible, in this case, comes from not seeing the ‘work’ as it’s made, it is created using a programming language (actionscript in this case) then compiled, this then only runs as long as the player runs ( and the work is created afresh each time the code is executed). I generated the animations below using Whitney’s ideas of incremental shift, which he discusses in ‘Digital Harmony‘ where he explores the realtionship between visual patterns and sounds. The elements in the animation are drawn by the computer, using maths, and moved the same way. Each element is moved by an incrementally larger amount. This, wierdly, creates a patterned logic of it’s own as the elements move. It’s rudimentary at this point but could go somewhere…
